What Is an Electric Diesel Generator?

An electric diesel generator is a machine that transforms diesel fuel into electricity. By utilizing the chemical energy from the diesel fuel, it drives an alternator to produce the needed power.

How Does a Diesel Generator Work?

A diesel electric generator works by burning the diesel fuel inside the engine housing. Among the components is the alternator, which is connected to a crankshaft. The fuel burning spins this crankshaft, which, in turn, rotates the magnets inside the alternator.

Once the alternator spins, it creates a magnetic field, which is then cut through by the wire coils. Due to a principle called “electromagnetic induction,” this interaction generates an electric current in the coils.

This power can then be supplied to other electrical devices using external cords.

Components of a Diesel Generator

The Engine

Diesel generator engines come in 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 18, 20, and even 24-cylinder combustion engines. The more cylinders the engine has, the more torque the generator provides, but the more fuel it consumes.

Some diesel engines come with aspirated engines, while others come with turbocharged engines that provide extra power without sacrificing fuel efficiency. 

The Fuel System

Diesel generator fuel systems consist of five primary parts, they are:

  • The tank: It stores the diesel fuel supply.
  • The pump: It pushes the fuel from the tank to the engine.
  • The lines: These are constructed from lines that can withstand high pressure so they can transport the fuel from the tank to the engine without cracking. 
  • The filters: Filters are responsible for clearing any contaminants that are present in the fuel before it reaches the injectors. 
  • The injectors: These injectors precisely spray the fuel into the cylinders to start the combustion process. 

The Alternator

As mentioned earlier, the alternator is the part where the mechanical rotation from the diesel engine is transferred into electrical power. It consists of four primary parts:

  • The stator: It’s the stationary portion that contains the wire windings that surround the rotor.
  • The rotor: It’s the rotating portion of the alternator, which is driven by the crankshaft to spin inside the stator.
  • The diodes: These are the rectifiers responsible for converting the alternator’s AC output to DC power usable by other electronic devices. 
  • The voltage regulator: This regulator controls the alternator voltage output to avoid delivering too much voltage, which can be dangerous. It also maintains constant, sage voltage levels during operation. 

The Cooling System

Since there’s a constant burn of fuel inside the generator, a cooling system is required to prevent the assembly from overheating. Typically, these systems consist of:

  • The radiator: The radiator is responsible for dry-cooling the generator using a strong fan.
  • The coolant fluid: In conjunction with the radiator, the coolant fluid cools the engine down using cold fluid (often water).
  • The coolant lines: These are the lines or tubes in which the fluid circulates the engine.
  • The water pump: This is the pump that pushes the coolant into the cooling system. 

The Control Panel

The control panel is how the user interacts with the generator via:

  • Engine controls: These controls can be manual or digital through a screen. They allow the user to start, stop, and adjust the engine speed. 
  • The alarm system: A critically important system that alarms the user when abnormalities like high temperatures and excessive pressure occur. 
  • The power meter: It displays the electrical output voltage, frequency, and amperage.

The Lubrication System

Any engine with mechanical components requires lubrication to prevent the wearing out of the components. Specialized oils are often used for the process. The system itself consists of:

  • The oil pan: oil pans are similar to fuel tanks. They act as reservoirs for the oil.
  • The oil pump: These pumps push the oil through the lines.
  • The oil lines: These are the tubes where the oil circulates to reach different engine parts.
  • The oil filters: Filters are critical to remove any impurities in the oil to avoid harming the mechanical components.
